Wedding inspiration _ Signs

We are going to have many international guests at our wedding and I think it'd be fun to make a sign like this showing how far it is to each destination: Australia, Sweden, England, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Italy, etc.
It'd also be fun to do one for the activities of the wedding: food, dance, wish tree, drink, photo booth, etc.
The older the wood and more of a recycled look, the better! A friend of mine has promised to collect some wood and we'll make it together during a weekend in spring. The only problem will be getting it to the location!

Wedding inspiration _ Burlap Ring Pillows

I am very much in love with burlap fabric. It gives a unique vintage rustic look that we are looking to achieve at our wedding. The combination of lace gives it a more elegant look together with silk ribbons in order to tie the rings on the pillow. It's easy to add fabric flowers to your pillow which can even be the part where your rings are tied. They can either be made with the burlap, or another rough fabric. You can also chose to make flowers that follow your general colour theme.
These kind of pillows are so easy to make by yourself!
This is my personal favourite! I love the combination of  the rustic burlap with the lace, a shiney silk ribbon and the fabric flowers. This is the look I will try to achieve!

A simple yet beautiful vintage look.

I like the idea of the pillow in the middle-left that has "grandma's old embroided lace" sewn onto the pillow. Not a bad idea at all. My grandma was very craftey and made many things like this.

This pillow is very sweet and has a slightly more rustic pillow but then combines the classic elegant flowers, pearls and ribbons to give it that eternal vintage look.

I love these whimsical felt flowers with buttons in the middle! How cute is that?

I actually don't mind the way they have sewn this pillow leaving the ends stick out. It's an easy way of doing it and gives it a more rustic feel.

Another beautiful country vintage feel. The burlap string creates an extra rustic feel.

The burlap chosen here is a bit more coarse and gives it a whiter look considering that you can see the stuffing inbetween the holes. I adore the little colourful flowers which is a nice way to integrate the colour theme of your wedding even in the ring pillow.

This is the lovely cottage home of Hanne Borge-Yngland in Kvitfjel, Norway. Beautiful black painted wooden walls and white painted wooden floors, rustic wooden furniture mixed with flashy industrial design. Natural fabrics, furs and open fires. A cozy family home.

Books books books II

So what are the trends for bookshelves 2011?
- Shape: Variability - flexibility
- Boxes / wooden crates
- Materials: combine many different materials, colours.

Rustic + New = perfect.

We already saw this trend starting to come at the end of 2010 with the fact of mixing design furniture with rustic second hand pieces. Perfect for the bachelour trying to find things for his new home!
A simular trend was seen in the 1920's when a lot of discoveries were being made in terms of materials. And then again in the 1950's when the use of second hand-recycled materials were being used. A well-known architect and furniture designer was Charles Eames. His bookshelves shown at the bottom of this article he combines different materials, colours, open and closed compartments, etc.
So why has this trend come again now?
Since we started keeping our eyes open for eco-friendly, recyclable, and low cost housing and furniture, it becomes natural to look for second hand furniture. In fact, what's the point of making new furniture if we already have them available? And what makes a home more personal than combining "randma's old rocking chair" with the latest design?

The bookshelf "Alternata" where the different compartments can be combined however suits you best.

Andrea Brugi _ Designer

These are the photos of the work and studio of Italian wood-work artist Andrea Brugi. He does work whos shapes are inspirerd directly from nature and the piece of wood he is working with. He is most known for his cutting boards.
But more than his work I was mainly impressed by the photos of his studio. A great rustic feel which puts you in a nice mood.
If you want to see more of his stuff check out his homepage:
